On CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-003) exam day, arrive at least 15 minutes early with two valid, unexpired IDs whose names exactly match your registration, complete check-in, and be ready for a maximum of 90 questions in 165 minutes — multiple-choice items plus hands-on performance-based questions (PBQs) that have you work through penetration-testing tasks. You need a scaled score of 750 on a 100–900 scale to pass, and you'll get your score report at the end.
Confirm your appointment, whether you're testing in person at a Pearson VUE center or online via OnVUE, and the two IDs you'll bring. For a hands-on exam, being well-rested matters more than last-minute cramming — the PBQs reward clear thinking, not exhaustion.
CompTIA requires two original, unexpired IDs — a government-issued primary ID with your name and a recent photo, and a secondary ID with at least your name and signature (or name and photo). The names must match your registration exactly. Expect to store everything else; the test center provides an erasable note board, so you don't bring your own paper.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Check-in includes ID verification, a digital photo and signature, and secure storage of your belongings before you're seated. Testing online via OnVUE means a system check, photos of your face and ID, and a webcam scan of your room. Arrive with a buffer so a queue doesn't cost you your slot.
PenTest+ is hands-on by design, so expect performance-based questions that ask you to work through penetration-testing tasks in a simulated environment — analyze output, choose the right tools, and act — not just answer from memory. You can flag items and review them before submitting.
PBQs can be time-consuming, so a common approach is to clear the quick multiple-choice items first, then invest your remaining time in the hands-on tasks. Budget your time so a single tricky simulation can't run away with the clock: if a PBQ stalls you, capture what you can, flag it, and move on, returning if time allows.
You'll receive your score report at the end of the session and in your CompTIA account. If you don't pass, you can retake immediately on a second attempt; from the third attempt onward you must wait at least 14 calendar days between tries. PenTest+ is valid for three years and renews through continuing education.
